Welcome to Sutton Fairtrade

What is FAIRTRADE?

The way that the international trading systems work, mean that farmers in developing countries are greatly disadvantaged. By choosing to buy products that have the FAIRTRADE mark, consumers can be assured that the goods have been produced under agreed labour and environmental standards that directly benefit farmers and their families in developing countries, and give them a route out of poverty.

Sutton was initially awarded the status of FAIRTRADE borough in March 2007 and this was renewed for 2 years on 9.7.09. Sutton is one of the 21 London boroughs with FAIRTRADE status and is part of London as FAIRTRADE city.

Take a FAIRTRADE Step in Sutton Campaign
Take a step is a national campaign that was launched in FAIRTRADE fortnight-  taking a step can be as simple as trying out a different brand of FAIRTRADE tea or  buying FAIRTRADE cotton wool for the first time .We have launched a Sutton version of the campaign which will run until FAIRTRADE fortnight next year – and we need your help .
How many steps would it take to walk from one end of the borough the other?
During the year we aim to collect enough virtual steps to do this through residents taking FAIRTRADE steps – for example staring to drink FAIRTRADE coffee at home = 20 steps. Watch here for more details in the June update and in the meantime please count your steps!

What did you do for FAIRTRADE fortnight? What do you have planned during the year? Do let us know by contacting us on admin@fairtrade.insutton.org. It will all count towards our FAIRTRADE steps for Sutton Campaign.
